JEAN VAN DE VELDE

What do you say to a woman, half human, half camera, who is facing you, with a half-smile, one open eye and a lens, holding a steadicam. She stares at you, and asks, "what are we doing here?" If she would have been wearing a police uniform I would have tried to prevaricate and say: "Nothing officer, I was just making sure that tree over there was not too dry." But yes, if Marieke looks at you with that camera, then all you can do is speak the truth, whether you want to or not. She has a disarming way about her, the ability to make people say what they really think or feel. And if she can also record it, and edit it and make it into something relevant and meaningful, one would call that ‘truly skilled’. And if you can use those skills when a crew is committed and focused working collectively on making a feature film without a second to spare, it is called "disarming, professional and compassionate work on a making-of “. And if, on top of that, you can be ‘one of the guys’ on your night off and show up at the right moment with a good bottle of whiskey, well, then you are truly amazing…

Working with your camera-person is a very intimate, creative process. You share hours in cars, on red carpets, studio stages, hotel lobby's and parties(!). And finally the material has to be edited and uploaded to wherever it needs to go. Working with Marieke makes life so much easier:she has a professional attitude, is a great camera-woman, a story-teller in editing and a wonderful person to work with. And I know George, Brad, Steven and even Nicole feel the same!

WHAT I WANT TO SAY ABOUT MARIEKE? I wasn’t sure if I liked it at first.
The camera is over there, that is the camera. It can’t be on the side, behind me, over there on the edge of my frame, out there ...Where did she go? Hm. She is good… The next day Ihad forgotten all about her. Yes, I did see her at lunch but then we were just joking around. What does she do? Nice lady, for sure! She can be charming, but I do want to feel safe on set! At times I would see her. Oh right, the making-of, that is what she is doing. And then I thought, well let's first actually make something before making the making-of. But she did it anyway. One day she asked if she could show me some of the footage she had cut. ‘Here are some of the shots.’ Well, sure... go ahead, show me. And then you get to see what you should see in a making-of. People, working together, the jazz, trying to make a great feature film. Fun, craftsmanship, discipline, it all comes together and it is all caught on tape. How did she do it? I have no idea. Don't ask me, I wasn’t even aware of it. But here is the evidence. She can do it! Better than anyone else and I felt safe.

I met Marieke when I worked on the feature film All Stars 2 Old Stars. She shot the making-of. It always feels strange for an actor when someone is on set and isn’t part of the actual process. As an actor, shooting scenes is very intimate and you have to be able to feel safe, especially with all the crew members, etc. That was something that I had to get used to at first, you don't know each other. Can you really be yourself? Is it safe? That kind of thing. You feel watched and don't know where the footage will end up being used. Anyway, if you let go of those feelings and fears, you become aware that she makes you feel very safe and that she is present in a way that doesn’t interfere with anything. And you miss her when she is not there. Marieke is a true professional who knows her craft and she knows how to capture things without interfering with the shoot. She is part of the crew, someone you can rely on!

When a woman is great at horseback riding and used to be a fashion model, you might say that a person like that does not need to hide behind a camera. And if she does, is she capable? Because when you are that beautiful you can’t possibly have brains as well, especially if you fell off a horse multiple times. Anyway, as you might understand, I initially started working with Ms. Niestadt, the director, with some reservations. But within minutes I had to let go of all my preconceived ideas. She quietly walks on set with the camera, invisible, not bothering anyone in the scene. Modest, but with empathy she captures what is happening. Then she will only ask the right questions, to the point and without false sentiment. That is impressive. It almost makes you wonder how good she would have been if she wouldn’t have been beautiful and had never fallen off a horse.

I met Marieke on the set of a TV commercial for Therme, I am their spokes model. Marieke shot the making-of, and I was excited to work with her on other projects. We collaborated again for the making-of for my new album in the studio of the famous producer Steve Power in London. Marieke captured the best and most precious moments while we were recording my new album: "Hind Crosspop". I recorded vocals for 10 songs in 6 days, so concentration was very important. Marieke becomes almost invisible when she works, so I could be myself, had great recording sessions, and didn’t feel self- conscious with the camera there. We went on to create the first music video for my new album. It was the first time for Marieke as a D.O.P. and she did such an amazing job, the way she shot it. Marieke is a very nice and sweet person to work with. And she knows how to capture the funniest and precious moments from the right angle.

The collaboration with Marieke is excellent. She is punctual, driven and captures special moments with her camera; you immediately trust her and aren’t afraid to show more of yourself than you would do otherwise. At the right moment she will take a step back and become almost invisible, and she is supportive and always willing to help out. Not only does she accomplish what is expected of her, but she surprised us by helping the production with her own initiatives. She is most pleasant to work with.

I met Marieke during the shoot of the feature film "Caged", directed by Stephan
Brenninkmeijer. I was one of the last to arrive at the ppm and did not notice that Marieke had already been shooting for some time. She stayed quietly in the "background", as a professional would. You instantly feel safe around her and you can be who you are. We spent 20 days on set together, she shot beautiful footage, which, in this case she will edit into a making-of. I got to see a sneak preview and it makes me so happy. Humor, drama and the right camera angles together create a wonderful piece of work. You can clearly see that she has
become part of our team. She is always welcome on "my" set.

Marieke shot the making-of for several TV commercials I directed. She is a charm to
work with. She will quietly go her own way and the end result looked better than mine.

CHANTAL DEMMING

Marieke is a very honest person who is dedicated and passionate about her work. It is very nice to have her on set. When it comes to trust issues, she is discrete and she asks your permission to shoot it or not. Marieke isn’t the center of attention, but she is present. She is warm and cheerful and a delight to be around!
